The Nintendo Player
A bunch of people have asked me over the past few weeks if I've got a Wii, or am planning to get one for Christmas.
Shit, no.
The reason is because, essentially, it's a Nintendo player. It's a cheap enough appliance I guess, but for me it's all about software - a $300 piece of junk I only use four times a year is not something I want to own. I'd rather invest that coin in actual software for my Xbox or PC.
If you do a quick check of software stores, you'll see the Wii has many, many more titles than just those made by Nintendo. The problem with this is that they're shit - some will leave you scarred for life. And the Nintendo titles are not much to like either, with 1990's graphics and bored charicatures like plumbers for heroes. I'm so not excited by the idea of playing Mario, even if you gave it to me with a free Wii to play it on, it probably wouldn't get plugged in.
What's interesting about all of this is that I feel there might be a minor Nintendo backlash on the cards for the future. If we consider all those parents getting the Little Jimmys of this world a Nintendo Wii for Christmas, they're going to be running out of games to play. Once they've done Warioware, Mario Galaxy, and Wii Fit, you're back to buying porn mags from the local store instead of software.
Those who's parents decided to get them something with longer legs will probably get a decent title each month, if not more often, throughout 2008. Their games will look better in HD, they'll play better without the trite mechanics of a motion controller being wedged into games that don't need it, and they'll be able to play online with their friends without needing a 128-bit number to identify people with.
I guess whilst it's cheap, and that will drive sales, what's missing is actual quality software. The Nintendo "Seal of Quality" is anything but. I just don't want the world to be upset that "gaming doesn't deliver" or some such other shit because they got a Wii and there's no software other than crap like Bread Ninja available.
